Club History

The Club was formed in January 1976 by a number of Lunar enthusiasts. They formed a committee to govern the affairs of the club, drew up a constitution and organised a first year programme of three rallies. The club’s first AGM was held at the end of its second season.

The first rally took place at Corse Lawn in Gloucestershire. As a number of members were travelling on to the National Rally they put a “word of mouth” PR campaign in motion and with help from the caravan press, membership grew quickly.

The second rally was in July at Weston Super Mare, and the final rally in 1976 was at Leyland where the Club used the field behind Campbell’s residential site. About 25 vans attended and by then membership had increased to 99. During the course of that first year it was decided to have special rally plaques for those members completing 25 rallies and establish a newsletter to keep members in touch. Generally rallies opened at 4.30pm on a Friday and closed at 4pm Sunday, apart from Bank Holidays. Most of the members being of working age, weekend rallies were the norm. It was a number of years before some of the rallies were extended to five days.

The first celebration rally - the 21st, was held Easter 1979 at Highbridge. Since then the Club has gone on to celebrate many more special rallies - its 100th in Oxford in 1984 to its 30th Anniversary in 2006, its 600th in 2007 and its 700th at Uttoxeter Racecource in September 2012. In September 2016 the Club hosted its 40th Anniversary rally, again at Uttoxeter Racecourse and in September 2017 we celebrated our 800th rally.

In 1982 the Club held its first overseas rally in France. Since then it has rallied extensively in France, Holland, Germany, Belgium and Switzerland and now generally has an overseas holiday in its programme each year.

In 2003, Lunar were taken over by a Dutch Holding company for a short period of time. They had other marques in their stable, notably the Chateau brand, and as a result of this the Club opened up membership to those owners.

The Club then expanded membership significantly over the following years and the annual overseas French rally has been very popular.

Of course all that changed with 2 events in 2020.  One was the demise of Lunar Caravans and the tight restrictions imposed by COVID.   The club has no commercial relationship to Lunar Caravans Limited of course

However, in 2022 the Club has a full programme of rallies and we look forward to seeing members on one of them!
